PEDIATRICS:

This department was established in 1947. It is more than 50 years old.It has 15 faculty members & 5 units. There are 150 beds , 20 in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ( N I C U ) and 6  in Pediatric  Intensive  Care  Unit ( P I C U )  facilities  and  for  ventilator care. P I C U facilities include ventilator care and other equipments like vital sign monitors, defribillator ,  Non -  Invasive  Blood  Pressure   equipments ,  Pulse  Oximetry  etc. Each eqipments costs 5 to 7 lac . N I C U has all type of latest equipments which provides level - 3 cares to the newborns, delivered at Civil Hospital or babies born outside.It runs  special   clinics  in   the  afternoon  in the  O P D  building , where   patients get free medication, treatment, drugs, special investigations.

At a time the deptt. has 30 PGs for  MD or DPed. This deptt. is also a centre for DNB exams conducted by NBE  ( National Board of Examination ) and centre  for  PGDMCH  course of IGNOU ( Indira Gandhi National Open University ).There is a   Diarrhaea Treatment Training Unit - D T T U with ORT (Oral   Rehydration Training) courses and training .Deptt.  is recognized as a  Baby  Friendly  Hospital as almost all mothers are motivated for breast feedings. A project on Nebulizer Therapy in Asthma is currently underway. It provides training to pediatricians, medical officers, nurses and paramedical staff from Govt.  and private sectors. Training is imparted to the PG students through  CME ( Continuous Medical Education ) for RCH ( Reproductive & Child Health), Essential Newborn  Care ,  Neonatal Life Support ( NALS ) & Pediatric Active Life Support ( PALS ) . Neonatal Equipments under the Gujarat Healthcare Project - O R E T has been given. It also has been host for State / National level conferences.  Medical students from many countries do their elective posting here. There is an alumni association also.

Pediatrics is a separate subject for the Under Graduate students & they have examination in part - II of Final MBBS Exams of Gujarat University which are held here since 1997. The department has a planned curriculum for the clinical clerkship which is given in advance to all UG students. For the PG students, the department has planned teaching programme for the whole term & this is given in advance to all PG students which includes seminars, case conferences, Clinico-Pathological Conferences (CPC), Pediatric Quiz etc.
