The western Regional Institute of Opthalmology was established in 1968. Opthalmology Department is known as Directorate of Opthalmology since 1981. In January 1984, it became separate from Civil Hospital Ahmedabad. There are 5 wards and 3 Operation Theatres. It has 250 beds for indoor patients. It is equipped with 6 specialized units like Cornea, C H Nagri Retina, Glaucoma, Oculoplasty, Squint, and General Ophthalmology. It has also facility of  Contact Lens Lab and clinic in the name of Smt. Lakshmi Maneklal .Other specialized clinics run by this institutes are : Community & Preventive Ophthalmology, Low Vision Aid Clinic & Geriatric OPD. It has specialized instruments such as in Cornea: Topography, Specular microscopy, D E Anklesaria Central Eye bank. In Retina: Lasers capsulotomy & Iridiotomy, Fundus Flouroscein angiography, Fundus Photography, Indirect Opthalmoscopy, in Glaucoma: Automated perimetry, Goldman perimetry, Applanation Tonomentry & Pneumotonometr in Squint: Synetophore prisms, latest instrument for Amblyopiatreatment. Specialized surgeries are being performed for R D, Keratoplasty, Orbitotomy, Squint, Antiglaucoma. Ptosis and  Phacoemulsification. It has lab services such as Microbiology, Histopathology, Biochemistry and Electrotherapy labs which provide structural support. It conducts camps, workshops and seminars on eye-donation and ophthalmic diseases.

Some Training Centers are run by this Institute which are recognized by WHO:1.Corneal Surgeries ( 2 ) Retina ( 3 ) Squint ( 4 ) IOL &  Phacoemulsification  ( 5 ) Small Incision Cataract Surgery ( Suture less Surgery )

The Institute is recognized as Western Regional Institute by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. Other courses such as Refresher Course for Ophthalmic Surgeons, Training School for Ophthalmic Assistants are also run. C M E programme for Ophthalmologists are conducted periodically. There is Mobile Eye Operation Theatre for outreach activities. Surveys for Blindness Control Programme of Government of India are also done.
